Dogs can develop many unwanted behaviours during their lives such as excessive barking, separation anxiety and soiling in the home. However, perhaps the most concerning behaviour is coping with a dog who acts aggressively towards other dogs. Aggression towards other dogs can isolate our canine friends and make life extremely challenging for even the most experienced dog owner. The prospect of taking on an aggressive dog as a novice owner is an incredibly daunting task, but that is exactly what Tracey McLennan did when she met Calgacus a Bull Mastiff.

As we know Bullmastiffs are pretty substantial dogs weighing in at up to 130 pounds. This imposing breed of dog was originally used to guard estates. With this protective instinct and courageous in-built temperament, this is a dog that certainly needs to be well trained and under control at all times. Unfortunately when Calgacus arrived with Tracey he badly attacked another dog and displayed aggressive behaviour towards others too.  Many dog owners would admit defeat when faced with such a difficult and complex situation but with kindness, patience and compassion and help from others Tracey managed to transform Calgacus into a sociable and happy dog. How did she do it? Well, Tracey explains her training secrets in great detail and this is certainly a book of substance. In fact it is a vital resource for dog owners with problematic dogs who feel they’ve no option but to keep their dogs away from other dogs or muzzled while out on the dog walk.

What Tracey achieved with Calgacus is nothing short of remarkable and also shows that with compassion and determination anything is possible! Sadly, as the book details the life and achievements of Calgacus, it also deals with the emotional devastation we feel when we lose a beloved pet, which often involves a sense of guilt that we could have done more. Tracey’s loss does leave an all too familiar lump in throat but  perhaps without Tracey’s grit and drive Calgacus would not have had the opportunity to experiencethe life he so enjoyed.
