Our review of a fascinating book about communicating with your cat.

This book contains interesting theories and facts and some beautiful shots of this very attractive animal. The incredible sensory capabilities of a cat and how it uses these are explored. How a kitten learns, play fighting and cleaning, scent marking, purring, kneading, miaowing, ear and whisker ‘language’ are all examined. An explanation is offered as to why the neighbour’s cat never buries its mess in your garden ( it’s about hierarchy). The author also suggests that cats can understand human language more extensively than a dog can, picking up actual words rather than just tone of voice. There are many interesting points.

The author’s style is at times rather whimsical – as a lot of writers about cats seem to be. Just because cats are a bit more reserved than dogs, and a bit less demonstratively needful of their owners, I find it hard to accept as fact that this means they are ‘far too clever to give us two-legged creatures a proper view into their inner world…. this would take away their aura of mystery’.

We cannot know how they perceive humans or their relationship to us. This is just a small irritation with what is otherwise a very attractive book. What is clear and fascinating is that this small but extremely efficient predator, quite capable of independent life, chooses to spend time with and to actually enjoy human company, in its own particular ways.

The book contains useful book and website bibliographies.
