It is claimed they arrived in North America in the early 17th by ship with European settlers and developed from there. The pedigree American Shorthair line began at the start of the 20th century. Additional imported cats were mated with local shorthair cats to develop this new breed. This breed is known for being laidback, affectionate and good with people. It is a cat that is more suited to an outdoor life. They are prolific hunters.
